2006 Walk of Fame Inductee - Phil Hill
Phil Hill
Born in Florida, Phil Hill moved with his family to California in the 1920s as the country began its love affair with the automobile and Southern California became the home of sports car racing in the United States.  Hill's "obsession' with cars, as he has called it, was fueled by a first taste of victory in a rally through the wilds of the San Fernando Valley at the age of 19.

In 1961, driving for Scuderia Ferrari, Hill became the first American to win the Formula One World Drivers Championship, "the ultimate competition in all of motorsports."  Other highlights include winning the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans three times, the 12 hours of Sebring three times, the Argentine 1000Km two times, the Grand Prix of Italy twice and the Belgian Grand Prix.  Hill went on to win countless other races in a career that spanned two decades.  He has the distinction of having won the first and last races of his driving career, the final victory being the BOAC 500 at Brands Hatch in England in 1967.

Hill has also worked as a television commentator for ABC's Wide World of Sports and as a contributing editor and writer for Road & Track magazine.  After his racing career Hill's passion switched to restoring antique automobiles.  His highly reputable restoration business won numerous awards over a span of two decades.  The crown jewel of his collection is the 1931 Pierce-Arrow, which has been in his family since new.  Hill and his wife, Alma, have one son and two daughters and reside in Santa Monica, California.

Hill's early career emphasized road racing and competitive drives in Jaguars and Ferraris, which brought him to the attention of the Ferrari factory team.  Probably more than any other American driver, Hill is associated with the Ferrari team, driving in a variety of endurance, road and eventually, Formula one contests.
