| Other key figures in Long Beach motorsports spoke at the event to honor the drivers: Jim Michaelian, CEO, Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, Chris Pook, co-founder of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, Gerry Miller, Long Beach City Manager, and Barry Mequire of Mequire's Polish. The bronze medallions were unveiled by the drivers and their families in front of a crowd of 200 fans and supporters. The driver's medallions are ioined by a medallion featuring the city seal, to commemorate the site as a project of the City of Long Beach. Phil Hill and Dan Gurney, world-famous racecar drivers who have brought enormous distinction to their sport, each have careers that have spanned decades, inspiring a generation of devoted fans, drivers and teammates around the world. Dan Gurney provided an Eagle 997 racecar, built in Santa Ana, California by Dan Gurney's company, All American Racers. The car raced in the Long Beach Champ CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) event in 1999. The Long Beach Motorsports Walk of Fame is located on a stretch of South Pine Avenue that has served as part of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach racecourse for more than 30 years and is also part of Long Beach's thriving downtown. |
| The inauguration of the Long Beach Motorsports Walk of Fame took place on April 6, 2006 on South Pine Avenue in front of the Long Beach Convention Center. The event, hosted by Long Beach Mayor Beverly O'Neil, honored its first inductees, drivers Phil Hill and Dan Gurney, who were in attendance with their families. |
